A main characteristic of all databases that earn this name is the catalog. Objects of all kinds created by the users are stored in it and can be retrieved by the management system in order to achieve its goals. The catalog can also be viewed directly, because it is, eventually, a bunch of tables. For daily business you usually don't need to know about the catalog and its workings. However it is sometimes helpful to have at least a basic understanding on what the catalog provides and how it is organized.
In this talk you will see an overview of the PostgreSQL catalog and its built-in standardized views, the information schema. In addition you will see some examples of questions that you may answer using your knowledge of the catalog and that are difficult to achieve with other tools.
